With what neutral molecule is `CIO^(ө)` isoelectronic?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Species which have the same number of bond pairs and lone pairs in the valence shell of the central atom are isostructureal. Thus, Cl atom in `ClO^(-)` has four electron pairs `[(7 + 1 xx 1)//2 = 4]` out of which one is a bond pair (Cl-O bond) and three are lone pairs. Thus, according to VSEPR theory, it is linear.
The neutral molecule, CIF has also 3 lone pairs and 1 bond pair around Cl atom. Therefore, it should also be linear. Thus `CIO^(-)` and CIF are isostructural.
