`Delta_(f)G^(@)` of `Cu_(2)S` is more negative compare to the `Delta_(f)G^(@)` of `CS_(2)` and `H_(2)S`. Hence both C and `H_(2)` cannot reduce `Cu_(2)S` to `Cu`.

However `Delta_(f)G^(@)` of `Cu_(2)O` is less negative than `Delta_(f)G^(@)` of CO. Thus C can reduce `Cu_(2)O` to form `Cu.`
`Cu_(2)O(s)+C(s)rarr 2Cu(s)+CO(g)`
