Two homogeneous spheres P and Q of different materials and masses 1 kg and 2 kg are kept in contact. The radii of A and B are 20 cm and 10 cm respectively. What is the distance of their centre of mass from the centre of A?

A

0.1m

B

0.15m

C

0.2m

D

0.25m

The correct Answer is:
C

Let O and O' be the centre of P and Q,
We assume that the origin is situated at O,
then `x_(1)=0` and `x_(2)=20 cm + 10 cm = 0.3 m`
`m_(1)=1 kg, m_(2)=2kg`
`therefore X_(cm)=(m_(1)x_(1)+m_(2)x_(2))/(m_(1)+m_(2))`
`=(1xx0+2xx0.3)/(1+2)=(0.6)/(3)=0.2 m`
`therefore` It is at a distance of 0.2 m from the centre O of A. Infact it is at the point of contact.
