Explain why the carbon -carbon bond in acetylene is shorter than the carbon-carbon bond in ethylene.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`sigma` -bond in acetylene `(HC-=CH)` is formed due to overlapping of two small sp-hybridised orbitals whereas in ethylene `(H_2C=CH_2)` it is formed by overlapping of two bigger `sp^2` hybridised orbitals. So, bond lengh of `HC-=CHlt H_2C=CH_2`
