Covalent character of transition metal h...

Covalent character of transition metal halide increases as the oxidation number of the metal increases. Explain.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

With the increase in oxidation number, size of the metal ion decreases. The combined effect of increasing oxidation number and decreasing ionic size increases the polarisation effect of the ions. Therefore covalent character of transition metal halides increases with increasing oxidation number.
