On being placed in water , sodium peroxide not only produces an alkaline solution but also some bubbles . If we assume that the peroxide ion picks up two protons from water to produce a compound that can be seen as the dibasic conjugate acid of peroxide ion and then this compound undergoes a redox disproportion . Using the above the information complete the following equation :
`Na_(2)O_(2)(s) + H_(2)O(l) rarr (A) (aq) + (B) (g)`.
(A) and (B) are :

A

`H_(2)O_(2) and NaOH`

B

`H_(2)O and O_(2)`

C

`NaOH and O_(2)`

D

`Na_(2)O and NaOH`

The correct Answer is:
C

From the given information, we can see that the reaction proceeds via formation of `H_(2)O_(2)` (which is diabasic conjugate acid of peroxide ion), `H_(2)O_(2)` then disproportionates into water and oxygen.
`Na_(2)O_(2)(s)+H_(2)O(l)rarr 2Na^(+)+Zn(OH)_(2)`
`Zn(OH)_(2)+2NaOH rarr Na_(2)ZnO_(2)+2H_(2)O`
Thus `Na_(2)ZnO_(2)` forms `2Na^(+) and [ZnO_(2)]^(2-)` ions.
