Describe the process involved when copper matte is added to a silica lined converter.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Copper matte mainly contains `Cu_(2)S` and FeS. For removing the gangue, FeS, silica present in the lining of the Bessemer converter acts as a flux and forms slag on reaction with FeO.
`{:(underset(("Gangure"))(2FeS) + 3O_(2) rarr 2FeO + 2SO_(2)),(underset(("Gangue"))(FeO) + underset(("Flux"))(SiO_(2)) rarr underset(("Slag"))(FeSiO_(3))):}`
Therefore, whole of the iron present in matte, is removed as slag.
