In which of the following solvents will `AgBr` has highest solubility?

A

`10^(-3)M NaBr`

B

`10^(-3)M NH_(4)OH`

C

Pure water

D

`10^(-3)M HBr`

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
B

`AgBr rarr Ag^(o+) +Br^(Theta)`
a. `NaBr rarr Na^(+) + Br^(Theta)`
Due to common ion effect of `Br^(Theta)`, solubility of `AgBr` will be less.
b. `NH_(4)OH rarr NH_(4)^(o+) + overset(Theta)OH`
`Ag^(o+) + overset(Theta)OH rarr AgOH`
`overset(Theta)OH` combines with `Ag^(o+)` ions to given `AgOH`. So accroding to Le Chatelier's principle, reaction will proced in formed direction and hence solubility of `AgBr` in `H_(2)O` will increases.
c. Solubility of `AgBr` in `H_(2)O` will remain unaffected (here `overset(Theta)OH` from water is very less i.e., `[overset(Theta)OH] = 10^(-7))`
d. `HBr rarr H^(o+) + Br^(Theta)`
So again due to common ion effect of `Br^(Theta)`, solubility of `AgBr` will decrease.
