An element of atomic number Z and mass n...

An element of atomic number Z and mass number A, emits an `alpha` particle, a `beta` particle and `gamma` radiations. What is the atomic number and mass number of the daughter element ?

A

a) Z-1 and A

B

b) Z-1 and A-2

C

c) Z-1 and A-4

D

d) Z-2 and A-4

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
B

The emission of the a particle decreases A by 4 and Z by 2 and the emission of a `beta` particle increases Z by 1 but A does not change. `gamma` rays do not produce any change in A and Z.
`therefore For the daughter clement atomic no. = Z-2+1 =Z-1 and mass number = A-4.
