Explain the meaning of the statement 'Adsorption is a surface phenomenon'.

When a solid adsorbent is placed in a closed vessel containing some gas or a solution, the molecules of the gas or the solute are adsorbed on the surface so that their concentration is higher on the surface. Hence, it is called a surface phenomenon.
