Analysis of many gaseous compounds of ph...

Analysis of many gaseous compounds of phosphorus shows that 1 litre of any gas at NTP never contains less than 1.384 g of phosphorus Again one litr eof phosphorus regarding approximate atomic mass. Molecular mass and atomicity of phosphorus from the above results?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

One gram mole of any gas occupies volume at NTP=22.4 litre.
One gram mole of any gas does not contain less than
`1.384xx22.4=31g` of phosphorus.
So, according to Cannizzaro's concept, the approximate atomic mass of phosphorous should be 31.
Mass of one gram mole of phosphorus vapour
`=5.536xx22.4=124`
Atomicity of phosphorus `=("Mol.mass")/("At.mass")`
`=(124)/(31)=4`

124 g of P_4 will contain which of the following : (1) 4 atoms of Phosphorus (2) 4N_A atoms of Phosphorus (3) N_A molecules of Phosphorus (4) 1 molecule of Phosphorus

There are several forms of solid phosphorus but only red and white forms are important. The white phosphorus consists of discrete tetrahedral P_(4) molecules. The structure of red phosphorus has not yet been completely determinated but there are evidences that it is polymeric and consists of chains of P_(4) tetrahdedral linked together. at room temperature , stable modification of elements phosphorus is red form. because of its highly polymerised structure, it is less volatile and less reactive than white phosphorus. in most of its compounds, phosphorus can have a valency of 3 or 5. phosphorus acid is peculiar because although it contains three hydrogen atoms per molecule, only two dissociation. The two hydrogen atoms of phosphorus acid are acidic because.
