White vitriol (hydrated zinc sulphate) i...

White vitriol (hydrated zinc sulphate) is isomorphous with `MgSO_(4).7H_(2)O` white vitriol contains 22.95% zinc and 43.9% of water of crystallisation. Find the atomic mass of zinc.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The formula of white vitriol should be `ZnSO_(4),7H_(2)O` as it is isomorphous to `MgSO_(4).7H_(2)O`, i.e. 7 water molecules are associated with one zinc atom, `7H_(2)O=7xx18=126`. Mass of Zn with which 126 parts of water by mass are associated `=(22.95)/(43.90)xx126=65.87`=atomic mass of zinc.
