A beam of light of lambda = 600 nm from ...

A beam of light of `lambda` = 600 nm from a distant source falls on a single slit 1 mm wide and the resulting diffraction pattern is observed on a screen 2 m away. The distance between first dark fringes on either side of the central bright fringe is

A

1.2 cm

B

1.2 mm

C

2.4 cm

D

2.4 mm

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The distance of the n-th minima from the central maxima,
` x_(n) = (nflambda)/(a)` [ a = slit width]
`therefore " " x_(1) = (1xx 200xx600xx10^(-7))/(0.1) = (12xx10^(-3))/(0.1) = 0.12 cm`
= 1.2 mm
`therefore` Distance of the first minima from the central maxima
= `2x_(1) = 2xx 1.2 = 2.4 mm `
The option (D) is correct.
