Calculate the number of formula units, number of oxygen atom and total charge in 3 gm of CO_(3)^(2-) .

The chemical compounds are represented by both Empirical and Molecular formulae. Whereas the former is only theoritical, the latter is the actual formula of a compound. In some cases, the two may be even same. A very popular organic compound is a major constituent of alcoholic drinks. (i) What is the empirical of the compound ? (ii) What is its molecular formula ? (iii) Give the chemical name of the compound (iv) Find the percentage composition of the compound ?

Assertion: Molecular formula shows the exact number of different types of atoms present in a molecule of a compound. Reason : Molecular formula can be obtained directly from empirical formula which represents the simplest whole number ratio of various atoms present in a compound.

PASSAGE-II : Empirical formula is the simplest formula of the compound which gives the atomic ratio of various elements present in one molecule of the compound. However, the molecular formula of the compound gives the number of atoms of various elements present in one molecule of the compound. Molacular formula = (Empirical formula) xxn implies n=("Molecular mass")/("Empirical formula mass") A compound may have same empirical and molecular formula. Both these formulae are calculated using percentage composition of constituent elements. An oxide of iodine (Atomic mass of I = 127 u) contains 25.4 g of iodine and 8 g of oxygen. Its formula could be :
