Why does the value of bond angle increas...

Why does the value of bond angle increase with increase in electronegativity of the central atom in `AB_(2)` type of molecule?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

As the electronegativity of the central atom of a molecule of `AB_(x)` type increases, the electron-pair responsible for covalent bond formation will be attracted towards the central atom. Consequently, bp-bp repulsion increases leading to an increase in bond angle.
