(i) Sodium metal is dropped in water?

When sodium metal is dropped in water vigorous reaction takes place liberating hydrogen. Here sodium metal is oxdise while water is reduced.
`2Na + 2H_(2)O to 2NaOH + H_(2)`
The reaction is highly exothermic and the hydrogen catches fire. The solution becomes basic.
