Expressing the physical state :
1) To make the chemical equation more informative the physical states of the substances may be mentioned along with their chemical formulae.
2) The different states i.e., gaseous, liquid and solid states are represented by the notations (g), (l) and (s), respectively.
3) If the substance is present as a solution in water, the word 'aqueous' is written.
4) The short form of it is written as (aq).
Eg 1 : `Fe_(2)O_(3(s)) +2Al_((s))rarr 2Fe_((s))+Al_(2)O_(3(s))`
Eg 2 : `C_((s))+O_(2(g))rarr CO_(2(g))`
Eg 3 : `Zn_((s))+H_(2)SO_(4(aq))rarr ZnSO_(4(aq))+H_(2(g))`
