1) When electricity is passed through an aqueous solution of sodium chlortde (called brtne), it decomposes to fom1 sodium hydroxide.

2) The process is called chlor-alkali process - because of the products formed chlor for chlortne and alkali for sodium hydroxide.
`2N/ACl_((aq))+2H_2O_((l))to2N/AOH_((aq))+Cl_(2(g))+H_(2(g))`
3) Chlortne gas given off at the anode and hydrogen gas at the cathode.
4) Sodium hydroxide solution is formed near the cathode.
5) The three products produced in this process are all useful.
