CO is an inflammable gas while `CO_2` is not-why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The oxidation states of carbon in `CO_2` and CO are +4 and +2 respectively. In any compound, the maximum oxidation state of carbon is +4 . Consequently, the carbon atom in CO has a tendency to increase its oxidation number, i.e . , CO has th e inherent urge to be oxidised. For this reason, it reacts readil y with oxygen, i.e., it is a combustible gas. `2CO+O_2 to 2CO_2`
On the other hand, the oxidation state of c arbon in `CO_2` is maximum ( +4) and so it has no tenden c y to be oxidised and unlike CO, it is not combustible.
