Draw the cis- and trans-structures of hex-2-ene. Which isomer will have higher b.p and why ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The general formula of hex-2-ene is `CH_(3) - CH_(2) - CH_(2) - CH = CH - CH_(3)`. Structural formulas of cis-and trans-isomers of this compound are-

The cis-isomer being more polar than trans-isomer has a higher value of dipole moment than that of the trans-isomer. Intermolecular dipole-dipole interaction in case of cis-isomer is more than that in trans-isomer. So, boiling point of the cis-isomer is higher.
