Will the molecularity of a reaction be '2' if its overall order is 2?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

An elementary reaction with an order of '2' is a bimolecular reaction because the order and molecularity are the same for an elementary reaction. However, a reaction having an order of '2' does not always indicate that the reaction is a bimolecular one. If a reaction with an overall order of '2' involves multistep, then each step of the reaction will have its own molecularity. Hence, a reaction with an overall of order '2' may not have a molecularity of '2,
