Why `N_2` is chemically inert? State conditon and reaction of `N_2` and calcium carbide.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In `N_(2)` molecule, the two N-atoms are linked by a triple bond `(N equiv N)` . Bond dissociation enthalpy of the triple bond is quite high (941.4 kJ-`moI^(-1)`) . Hence, it is difficult to cleave the bond at room temperature. Thus, it is chemically very inert.
