In the manufacture of `H_(2)SO_(4)` by the contact process, `SO_(3)` is not directly dissolved in water-- why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Dissolution of `SO_(3)` in water is very fast and liberates a large amount of heat. The reaction is highly exothermic. Hence, solubility of `SO_(3)` in water decreases and most of the `SO_(3)` molecules escape. Thus, `SO_(3)` is not directly absorbed in water in the manufacture of `H_(2)SO_(4)` by contact process.
