The molecular formula of a complex id Pt...

The molecular formula of a complex id `PtCl_(4).2KCl`. From electrical conductance measurements, the molecule was found to contain three ions. The compound does not give any precipitate with `AgNO_(3)` solution. Identify the compound.

Text Solution

The complex does not contain any `Cl^(-)` ion in its ionisation sphere because it does not give precipitate of `AgCl` when it reacts with `AgNO_(3)`. Hence all six `Cl^(-)` ions are bonded to the metal ion as ligands in the coordination sphere.
`PtCl_(4).2KCl-=K_(2)[PtCl_(6)],K_(2)[PtCl_(6)]hArr 2K^(+)+PtCl_(6)^(2-)" (3 ions)"`
Thus, the complex is `K_(2)[PtCl_(6)].`
