Which one of the isomeric dichlorobenzen...

Which one of the isomeric dichlorobenzens has the highest melting point and why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The melting point of p-dichlorobenzene is the highest. The most symmetrical molecules of the p-isomer pack closely in the crystal lattice. As a result, the intermolecular force of attraction are much stronger. Therefore, the p-isomer melts at a temperature higher than that of the o- and m-isomers.
