Aneuploidy is a phenomenon which occurs due to non-disjuction, resulting in gain or loss of one or more chromosomers during meiosis.
Aneuploidy is different from polyploidy. Polyploidy is a phenomenon in which the organisms contain more than two monoploid valure or basic sets of chromosomes. i.e., -3n, 4netc. Example of such organisms are certain fish and salamanders and is commonly found in plants like grapes, banana.
Chromosomal Abnormalities
(a) Down's syndeome is an autosomal disorder that is caused by the trisomy of chromosome 21.
The individual is short statured with round head, open mouth, protruding tongue, short neck, slanting eyes, and broad short hands. The individual also shows reatrded mental and physical growth under developed gonads and genitats, etc.
(b) Klinefelter's syndrome is the chromosomal disorder that is caused by the presence of an additional copy of X-chromosome resultiong in the karyotype 45+XXY.
In this disorder sex of the individual is masculine but possess feminine characters also. The individual shows gynaecomastia i.e., development of breasts. The individual will be often sterile having poor beard growth and feminine pitched voice.
(c ) Turner's syndrome is the chromosomal disorder that is caused by the absence of one of the X-chromosomes, resulting in the karyotype 45+XO.
In this disorder the individual (female) will be sterile with rudimentary ovaries. Other symptoms include shield-shaped thorax, webbed neck, poor development of breasts, short stature, small uterus and puffy fingers.

Chromosomal disorders are caused due to absence or excess or abnormal arrangement of one or more chromosomes. Failure of segregation of chromatids during cell division cycle results in the gain or loss of a chromosome, and is called aneuploidy. Failure of cytokinesis after telophase stage of cell division results in an increase in a whole set of chromosomes in an organism and, this is known as polyploidy. This genetic disorder called ................. is caused due to the presence of an additional copy of ...........-Chromosome resulting into a karyotype of 47, XXY. Identify the disorder.

Three copies of chromosome -21 in a chield with Down's syndrome have been formed analysed using molecular biology technology to detect any possible DNA polymorphism with reference to different alleles located on chromosome -21. Results showed that out of 3 copies 2 of the chromosomes of the child contain the same alleles as one of the mother's alleles. Based on this when did the non-disjunction event most likely occur.

Read the following statements and find out the correct statements. The sex determination in honey bee is based on the number of sets of chromosomes an individual receives. An offspring formed from the union of a sperm and an egg develops as a female (queen or worker), and an unfertilized egg develops as a male (drone) by means of parthenogenesis. The females are diploid having 32 chromosomes and males are haploid, i.e., having 16 chromosomes. This is called as haplo-diploid sex-determination system and has special characteristic features such as the males produce sperms by mitosis they do not have father and thus cannot have sons, but have a grandfather and can have grandsons.
