A body is falling from a height h. After it has fallen a height `(h)/(2)`, it will possess

A

only potential energy

B

only kinetic energy

C

half potential and half kinetic energy

D

more kinetic and less potential energy

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
C

As we know that when a body is at height h, it has
total energy = KP+PE
and at height 'h', velocity of body is zero.
So, `KE=0andPE=mgh`
So, `"total energy =mgh+0=mgh"`

Now, at height `(h)/(2)`
its, `PE=mg"(h)/(2)=(mgh)/(2)" ".....(i)`
And `KE=(1)/(2)mxx(sqrt(gh))^(2)=(mgh)/(2)" ".....(ii)`
So, from Eqs. (i) and (ii) body at `((h)/(2))` possesses half potential energy and half kinetic energy.
