The density of oxygen is 1.43 g L^(-1) a...

The density of oxygen is `1.43 g L^(-1)` at STP. Determine the density of oxygen at `17^(@)C` and 800 torr.

Text Solution

Applying the formula `d = (MP)/(RT)`
At STP, `d_(1) = (MP_(1))/(RT_(1))`
`[P_(1) = 760 " torr", T_(1) = 273 K, d_(1) = 1.43 g L^(-1)]`
At given conditions, `d_(2) = (MP_(2))/(RT_(2))`
`[P_(2) = 800 " torr ", T_(2) = 290 K, d_(2) = ?]`
So, `(d_(2))/(d_(1)) = (P_(2))/(T_(2)) xx (T_(1))/(P_(1))`
or `d_(2) = (P_(2))/(P_(1)) xx (T_(1))/(T_(2)) xx d_(1)`
`= (800)/(760) xx (273)/(290) xx 1.43 = 1.417 g L^(-1)`
