Identify the elements X a from the following information.
(a) X has 17 protons and 18 neutrons (b) Y has 17 protons and 20 neutrons.

Both the elements X and Y are the isotopes of the same element chlorine because they have the same number of protons (17).
Remember : Two different element cannot have the same number of protons. Therefore, X and Y are the isotopes of the same element.
