When electricity is passed through a comon salt solution, sodium hydroxide is produced along with the liberation two gases 'X' and 'Y'. The gas 'X' burns with a pop sound whereas 'Y' is used for disinfecting drinking water.
(i) Idenrify X and Y.
(ii) Give the chemical equation for the reaction stated above.
(iii) State the reaction of Y with dry slaked lime.

Text Solution

(i) The gas 'X' is `H_(2)` and gas 'Y' is `Cl_(2)`
(ii) The chemical equation for the reaction is :
`2NaCl(aq)+2H_(2)O(l)overset(("Electric current"))to 2NaOH(aq)+underset((X))(H_(2)(g))+underset((Y))(Cl_(2)(g))`
(iii) `Cl_(2)` reacts with slaked lime to from bleaching powder.
`Ca(OH)_(2)+underset((Y))(Cl_(2))to underset("Bleaching power")(CaOCl_(2)+H_(2)O).`
