Explain oxidation and reduction in terms of loss and gain of electrons with an example.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Oxidation is process in which an atom or a grup of atoms taking part in chemical reactions lose one or more electrons e.g: `underset(Manganate)(MNO_4^(2-))tounderset(Permanganate)(MNO_4^(-))+underset((Decrease of n egative char g e))(e^(-))`
Reduction is a process in which an atom or a group of atoms taking part in chemical reactions gain one or more electrons, `Ag^(+) +e^(-) to Ag` (decrease of positive charge)
