Give reasons :
i) lonic compounds in solid state do not conduet electricity, whereas in molten state are good conductors of electricity.
(ii) ii) Silver articles when exposed to air gradually turn blackish.
ii) Chenmical reaction does not take place when copper is added to iron sulphate solution.

(i) In the solid state ionic compounds do not conduct electricity because movement of ions in the solid is not possible due to their rigid structure.
In solid state, they are hard because of the strong force of attraction between the positive and negative ions.
In molten state, electrostatic forces of attraction between the oppositely charged ions are overcome due to the heat.
thus the ions nnove freely and conduct electricity. (ii) Silver reaucts with sulphur in the air to fornm a coating of silver sulphide.
Reactivity of copper is less than that of iron.

What would you observe when zinc is added to a solution of iron (II) sulphate ? Write the chemical reaction that take place

There are 115 elements known till today. Some of them are metals and some are non-metals. Metals are usually hard, malleable and ductile and have metallic lustre. Non-metals are usually soft, do not posses lustre and are not malleable and ductile. But iodine is a non-metal which has metallic lustre. Iodine is also important for us. Non-metals are bad conductors of heat and electricity. (i) Why iodine is important for us ? (ii) Name a non-metal which is good conductor of heat and electricity. (iii) As a student, what initiative you will take to comment on the statement that "Iodised salt is good for health". Give any two suggestions.

When a copper wire was left in silver nitrate solution for sometime, it was observed that the solution turned bluish green. (i) Explain the observation . (ii) Write the balanced chemical equation to represent the change taking place.

Give suitable reasons for the following statements: (i) Rain water conducts electricity but distilled water does not. (ii) We feel burning sensation in the stomach when we over seat. (iii) A tarnished copper vessels regain its shine when rubbed with lemon. (iv) The crystals of washing soda change to white powder on exposure to air.

Give reasons: (i) "Alloys of iron are more useful when compared to pure iron." (ii) Copper loses its brown layer gradually when exposed to air. (iii) Aluminium oxide is called amphoteric oxide.
