A bimetallic strip consists of metals X ...

A bimetallic strip consists of metals X and Y. It mounted rigidly at the base as shown. The metal X has a higher coefficient of expansion compared to that for metal Y. When the bimetallic strip is placed in a cold bath

A

it will bend towards the right

B

it will not bend but shrink

C

it will bend towards the left

D

it will neither bend or shrink.

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
C

Metal X has higher coefficient of expansion then Y. When strip is placed on cold water, X decreases its length much faster than Y, and it also cools faster. So, whole system has a tendency to bend towards left side.
