Why do HCl, `HNO_(3)`, etc., show acidic characters in aqueous solutions while solution of compounds like alcohol and glucose do not show acidic character ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

HCl and `HNO_(3)` are ionic compounds and dissociate into `H^(+)` and the respective cation (`Cl^(-)` and `NO_(3)^(-)`) in aqueous solutions. `H^(+)` (aq), in solution, are responsible for their acidic properties. Glucose and alcohol solution are covalent compounds and do not produce ions when dissolved in water. Hence they do not show any acidic character.
