Why do acids not show acidic behaviour in the absence of water ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Acids dissociate hydrogen ions only in their aqueous solution. An acid shows acidic behaviour because of the presence of hydrogen ions.
In the absence of water, acids do not dissociate their hydrogen ions. Hence they do not show acidic behaviour in the absence of water.
