State the general electronic configuration of p-block elements. Which factors largely governs the properties of p-block elements ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The general electronic configuration of p-block element is `ns_2 np^(1-6)`. Except helium (He) which has `1s^(2)` configuration.
The properties of p-block elements are influenced by :
(i) Atomic size
(ii) Ionisation enthalpy
(iii) Electron gain enthalpy
(iv) Electronegativity
(v) Absence of d-orbitals in second period elements and presence of d or d and f-orbitals in heavier elements.
The presence of all the three types of elements, metals, metalloids and non-metals bring diversification in chemistry of these elements.
