Discuss the variations in atomic and ionic radii of elements in group-15.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The atomic radii of the elements of group-15 are smaller as compared to the elements of group-14 (carbon family).
Down the group, the atomic radii of the elements increases with the increase in atomic number because of addition of new principal shells in each succeeding elements.
The increase in covalent radius is more significant from nitrogen to phosphorus however there is small increase in radii from As to Bi because of presence of completely filled d or f-orbitals in heavier members.
