Why does hydrogen occur as a diatomic molecule under normal conditions ?

Hydrogen atom is one electron short of the nearest inert gas structure. It has a great tendency to pair up its electron and get .He. gas configuration. By sharing an electron pair, between two hydrogen atoms, diatomic molecule is formed.
