What hazardous materials have to be dealt with while disposing the electronic items? How would these materials affect the environment?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

When we dispose off electronic wastes, the hazardous materials in them include plastics and electronic chips made of silicon.
Such materials are non-biodegradable and will remain unchanged for a long time in the environment.

Apart from plants and animals, microbes form a permanent biotic component in an ecosystem. While plants have been referred to as autotrophs and animals as heterotrophs, what are microbes referred to as ? How do the microbes fulfil their energy requirements ?

A parallel plate capacitor is to be designed with a voltage rating 1 kV, using a material of dielectric constant 3 and dielectric strength about 10^(7) Vm^(-1) . (Dielectric strength is the maximum electric field a material can tolerate without breakdown, i.e., without starting to conduct electricity through partial ionisation.) For safety, we should like the field never to exceed, say 10% of the dielectric strength. What minimum area of the plates is required to have a capacitance of 50 pF?

    (a) Obtain the de Broglie wavelength of a neutron of kinetic energy 150 eV. As you have seen in Exercise 11.31, an electron beam of this energy is suitable for crystal diffraction experiments. Would a neutron beam of the same energy be equally suitable? Explain. (m_(n) = 1.675 xx 10^(-27) kg) (b) Obtain the de Broglie wavelength associated with thermal neutrons at room temperature (27^(@)C) . Hence explain why a fast neutron beam needs to be thermalised with the environment before it can be used for neutron diffraction experiments.

Brass has a tensile strength 3.5xx10^(8) N//m^(2) . What charge density on this material will be enough to break it by electrostatic force of repulsion? How many excess electrons per square Å will there then be? What is the value of intensity just out side the surface?

Average temperature of the Earth was 300 K when the Earth came into existence. At present its average temperature is 3000 K (This is due to the heat evolving from the disintegration of radioactive substances at the core of the Earth) What would be the radius of the Earth at the toime of its birth ? For the material of the Earth gamma=3xx10^(-5)K^(-1) . At present, radius of the Earth = 6400 km.
