Why is Ka2 less than Ka1 for H2SO4 in wa...

Why is `Ka_2` less than `Ka_1` for `H_2SO_4` in water.?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`H_2SO_4` is a dibasic acid. `Ka_1` and `Ka_2` refer to the following ionisation reactions.`H_2SO_4+H_2OiffH_3O^(+)+HSO_4^(-)---(1)Ka_1HSO_4^(-)+H_2OiffH_3O^(+)+SO_4^(2-)---(2)Ka_2` Since `HSO_4^-` is a negatively charged ion,.it has less tendency to donate a proton to water. So `Ka_2` is much less than `Ka_1`
