Predict the number of unpaired electrons...

Predict the number of unpaired electrons in the squar planar `[Pt(CN)_4]^(2-)` ion.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The puter electronic configuration of Pt is `5d^96s^1`.in `[Pt(CN)_4]^2-` the oxidation state of Pt is +2 and has the configuration `5d^8` for squar planar shape the hybridisation of Pt must be `dsp^2` hence under the influence of CN- the d electrons of Pt get paired to make one d orbital empty so ther are no unpaired electrons in the complex ion.
