What is the basic difference between the terms electron gain enthalpy and electronegativity?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Electron gain enthalpy refers to the tendency of an isolated gaseous atom to accept an additional electron to form a negative ion, whereas electronegativity refers to the tendency of an atom to attract the shared pair of electrons in a covalent bond. Thus, the two properties are quite different from each other, though both of them refer to the tendency of an atom to attract electrons.
