What is the cause of Lanthanide contract...

What is the cause of Lanthanide contraction.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

General electronic configuration of lanthanides Is `4f^(1-14) 5d^(0-1) 6s^(2)`. The distinguishing electrons of these elements enter 4f-subshell one by one. The f-orbtals, being too much diffushed in shape have ery poor shielding effect. So the attraction of the nucleus for the electron is highly increased and hence the lanthanide contraction is observed.
