Why two H-bridge bonds are present in diborane?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In diborane B is `sp_3` hybridised with a vacant orbital represented by dotted line. After formation of two normal `B - H` bond by both B-atoms hybridised orbital of one boron atom and the empty orbital of the other overlap simultaneously with 1s hydrogen orbital on both side resulting two H-bridge bond.
