Explain Charles.s law on the basis of the kinetic theory of matter.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

(a) According to the kinetic theory of gases, the average kinetic energy of gas particles (molecules) is directly proportional to its absolute temperature.
(b) Thus, when the temperature of a gas is increased, the particles (molecules) would move faster and will strike more frequently the walls of the container.
(c) If the pressure is kept constant, volume increases proportionately.
(d) Hence, at constant pressure, volume of a given mass of a gas is directly proportional to temperature (Charles.s Law).
