Does the change in volume of a body when...

Does the change in volume of a body when its temperature is raised depend on whether the body has cavities inside, other things being equal?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

No, the change in the volume of a body is always the same whether there is any cavity or not. Suppose we cut off a portion and then place it back in the cavity. On heating the body, the two parts will expand and no gap is created, so the fact that a portion has been cut off does not affect expansion--the whole body expands, as if it had not been out. The distance between A and B remains the same, irrespective of whether matter is (i) continuous from A to B or (ii) discontinuous.
