Why is diamond a bad conductor of electricity but a good conductor of heat?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In diamond, each `C`-atom is `sp^(3)` hybridised and is tetrahedrally bonded to four carbon atoms. Diamond does not have free electrons. Since the conduction of electricity requires the presence of free electrons, diamond is a bad conductor of electricity. But conduction of heat does not require the presence of free electrons, so diamond is a good conductor of heat.
