Explain why propanol has higher boiling point than that of the hydrocarbon, butane?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Though butane and propanol have comparable molecular musses ( 58 and 60 respectively).. yet propanol has higher boiling point than butnne because propanol shows hydrogen bonding. Figure Due to which its molecules get associated and boil aat higher temperature thańbutàne because it shows no hydrogen bonding. The molecules of butane are held together by ộly weak van der Wals forces of attraction.
