Unlike phenol 2,4 dinitrophenol and 2 4,6 trinitro phenol are soluble in aqeous sodium carbonate solution. Why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Because of the strong clectron withdrawing nature of `-NO_2` group. both 2,4 - dinitrophenol and `2,4,6` - trinitrophenol are more acidic than carbonic acid and hence dissolve in aq. `Na_2 CO_3` solution to form the corresponding sodiuni salts with the evolution of `CO_2`

When we pass carbon dioxide gas through a green coloured solution of potassium manganate, the colour of solution changes to purple and a brown coloured solid gets precipitated. The green colour of potassium manganate solution also becomes purple when it is subjected to electrolysis using iron electrodes. In following reaction 3 K_2 underset("(green)")(MnO_4 + 2H_2 O + 4CO_2 to underset("(purple)")(2KmnO_4 )+MnO_2 + 4KHCO_3 the function of CO_2 is

Amongst the following, total number of compounds soluble in sodium bicarbonate are: 2,4,6-trinitrophenol, benzoic acid, salicylic acid, acetyl chloride, acetic anhydride, trifluoroethanol, acetamide, benzenesulphonic acid.

Assertion : Carbon oxygen bond length of phenol is slightly less than that in methanol. Reason : There exist a partial double bond character and carbon to which oxygen is attached in phenol is sp^2 hybridised.
