On the basis of quantum numbers, justify that the `6^(th)` period of the periodic table should have 32 elements.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`6^(th)` period contains the subshells 6s, 4f, 5d, 6p
6s can accommodate two electrons (2 elements)
4f can accommodate 14 electrons (14 elements)
5d can accommodate 10 electrons (10 elements)
6p can accommodate 6 electrons (6 elements)
`rarr` Total no. of electrons can accomodation `6^(th)` period are `2+14+10+6=32`
`therefore 6^(th)` period of periodic table contains 32 elements.
